Nita Ambani makes a strong case of Indian Sports growing ecosystem; invites global sport leaders to ‘New India’, land of limitless sporting opportunities

  • 08 October, 2019
  • London
  • 9 min read

Mrs. Nita Ambani, member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Founder Chairperson, Reliance Foundation called upon the global leaders in sports to see India as a land of limitless opportunities and invited them to be part of the journey of the world’s youngest nation’s fast-growing sports ecosystem.

Delivering a key note speech ‘Inspiring A Billion Dreams: The India Opportunity’, at the Leaders Week 2019 London - the most prestigious global sports leaders conclave - Mrs Ambani presented a glimpse into how young India has taken massive strides in the world of sports and is poised to become a sporting powerhouse with over 600 million of its billion plus population under the age of 25 coupled with a fast growing economy.

Mrs Ambani said: “There is no reason why a nation of 1.3 billion people cannot be amongst leading medal-winners on the international stage. It is my hope and dream to see India host some of the most iconic sporting championships in the world like the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. I invite everyone to join us and be a part of the great Indian dream – the India opportunity.”

Presenting a compelling case on Indian sports, Mrs Ambani observed, “New India is a land of limitless opportunities and it today presents the most exciting time for sports in India. There has never been an environment more conducive, more encouraging, more enabling for sports, than what we have in India today.”

Mrs. Ambani praised the current Indian government for promoting a healthy sports culture in the country. “We are fortunate that our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a great vision to transform India into a global sporting powerhouse. In addition to promoting Yoga globally, Prime Minister Modi has recently launched two major initiatives to promote sport. The Khelo India programme and the ambitious Fit India movement.”

“India is truly emerging as the newest and youngest sporting power in the world. The picture of fast changing sporting landscape offers you a unique India combined with the power of Democracy, Diversity, Development, and Demography. We are proud of being a free, open, liberal and democratic society and the new India is a land that invites all of you with open arms,” said Mrs Ambani addressing a gathering of over 300 industry leaders representing global brands.

The economic power of sport in the country is validated by the spectacular growth of the IPL media rights. For the first ten years, the media rights for the cricket league went for 950 million dollars. Starting IPL 2018, it witnessed a staggering growth of 500 percent for five years

Terming India as a nation of sports lovers, Mrs Ambani highlighted the fact that despite India not making it to the 2019 Cricket World Cup final, over 180 million Indian viewers tuned in to TV sets to watch England Vs New Zealand final, while only 15 million watched it in UK.

“Now imagine if India were playing in the final,” said Mrs Ambani light-heartedly pointing to the fact how cricket is an obsession back home.

The consumer market for other global sports events like the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Premier League have grown exponentially over the past few years in India. In 2018, 800 million Indians consumed sports on TV alone.

Popularity of IPL has led to the emergence of many more professional leagues in India like football, hockey, badminton, volleyball, basketball, wrestling and kabaddi.

Mrs Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians cricket team, said her first tryst with sports was through cricket, “I was 44, when most sportspersons retire, I entered the arena through Mumbai Indians. It changed my life, my perspective, and my worldview. From having no knowledge of cricket in 2009, to learning the nitty-gritties of the game, today after ten years , I can proudly say that we have built Mumbai Indians into the most valued team in the IPL with four IPL and two Champions League titles.”

“As a teacher and a mother, I knew children in our school would wake up in the middle of the night to watch the Premier League. That is when I realized that the younger generation had a huge interest in football. I saw that there was a big opportunity in India for this beautiful game,” said Mrs Ambani.

In just five years, ISL has emerged as the third most watched league in India. ISL viewership for 2018-19 on TV alone was 168 million, and digital viewership was over 12 million.

The ISL has also provided a platform for thousands of youngsters to see football as a viable career option, something that Mrs Ambani feels ‘unthinkable’ ten years ago in an Indian household. She cited an example of Sandesh Jhingan, now an established player for his ISL club and the Indian national team.

“When Jhingan started out in ISL, he was bought for just 3000 dollars. Today, he draws a salary of a hundred and eighty thousand dollars - 60 times over his starting salary.”

The ISL has not only changed the footballing ecosystem in the country at the professional level but at the grassroots level too, reaching out to over 1.5 million children.

As the founder-chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, Mrs Ambani spearheads the Education and Sports for All (ESA) initiative, helping enhance the lives of children all over the country and pushing the underprivileged and differently-abled through their various programmes.

Mrs Ambani said, “Our RF Youth Sports programme for schools and colleges has reached out to 9 million children. The Reliance Foundation Jr NBA programme has impacted 11 million children. Overall, across all sports, Reliance Foundation has touched the lives of over 21.5 million children across the country.”

Summing up, Mrs Ambani spoke of her three objectives she hope to achieve – to make sure no child is deprived of sport and hoped the ‘Right to Sport’ could be declared as a fundamental right; to see India emerge as a global sports powerhouse; and sports acting as a medium of peace, amity and understanding in the world as she paid tribute to the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Reliance employees give new life to waste plastic bottles

Collect record setting 78 tons of waste plastic bottles for recycling to spread message of Swachhata hi Seva

In a one of its kind collection drive, Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), announced on Friday that through its Recycle4Life campaign, volunteers have collected over 78 tons of waste plastic bottles for recycling. This record-setting collection drive was made possible by mobilizing over three lac employees, their family members and partners of RIL and its allied businesses like Jio and Reliance Retail across their several locations in India.

The company wide campaign – Recycle4Life was rolled out in October where employees were encouraged to collect waste plastic bottles from their surroundings and bring them to their offices for recycling. RIL and allied businesses across India participated in the drive spreading the message of recycling for a cleaner and greener Earth.

Mrs Nita M Ambani, Founder and Chairperson, Reliance Foundation said: “At Reliance Foundation, we believe that caring for our environment is of utmost importance. Building on Reliance Foundation’s ongoing efforts to promote, practice, and spread the message of Swachhata hi Seva, we have launched the Recycle4Life campaign to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. Thousands of Reliance employees and their families across the length and breadth of India have volunteered as part of this initiative and supported our record-setting drive to collect and recycle plastic waste. We are committed to creating a better, brighter, cleaner and greener world for our future generations.”

Reliance Foundation regularly supports clean-up activities in the local community. Over the last year, Reliance Industries’ employees have been participating in the cleanliness drive of the Mithi River and the Versova beach in Mumbai. Commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Jio teams from across the country came together to do a major cleanliness drive in over 800 railway stations. Doctors and nurses from the Reliance Foundation Hospital have been doing cleanliness activities and community awareness activities in their local neighbourhood. Engaging with the rural community, Reliance Foundation has also been supporting cleaning and recycling activities across several villages in different part of India.

The waste plastic bottles that have been collected as a part of Recycle4Life campaign will be recycled through eco-friendly manufacturing processes into value added fibres at one of the RIL’s recycling units. For over two decades now as a part of its sustainable business practise RIL has been recycling postconsumer (used) waste PET bottles. This is a classic example of sustainability and circularity as it is the only company in the world that has created a complete circle from creation of PET resin for making bottles, collection of discarded PET bottles, converting them to Recron® Green Gold, eco-friendly polyester fibres for use by downstream textile value chain that converts the fibres in to high-value sleep products and R|Elan™ fabric 2.0 based fashion apparel.

RIL is one of the largest used PET bottle recyclers in India and it has developed R|Elan™ Green Gold fabric technology which has one of the lowest carbon footprints globally. This is thanks to extensive research and development, and using its expertise in fibre re-engineering, RIL has created R|Elan™ – a portfolio of speciality fabrics. R|Elan™ enhances performance attributes in all apparel segments, such as active wear, denim, formal wear, casual, and ethnic wear. These fabrics have been created with active participation of Hub Excellence Program (HEP) partners, spread across various textile centres of India.

Educationist, philanthropist, and businesswoman Nita Ambani has been named an Honorary Trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was announced today by Daniel Brodsky, the Museum's Chairman. Mrs. Ambani’s election took place at the November 12 meeting of the Board. She is the first Indian to be so honored.

Mr. Brodsky commented: “Mrs. Ambani’s commitment to The Met and to preserving and promoting India’s art and culture is truly exceptional. Her support has an enormous impact on the Museum’s ability to study and display art from every corner of the world. It is a pleasure to welcome Nita Ambani to the Board.”

Nita Ambani said, “It has been deeply rewarding for me over the past several years to support The Metropolitan Museum of Art in its desire to expand and enhance its program of exhibiting the arts of India. I have been moved and impressed by The Met’s keen interest, which enables our commitment to seeing Indian art and culture represented on the global platform. This great distinction inspires me to redouble my efforts on behalf of India’s heritage, from the ancient to the contemporary.”

Nita Ambani is the Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, an Indian philanthropic organization that has supported The Met since 2016, beginning with the exhibition Nasreen Mohamedi. That presentation was the first museum retrospective of the artist's work in the United States and was also one of The Met Breuer's inaugural exhibitions. In 2017, the Reliance Foundation committed to support exhibitions that explore and celebrate the arts of India. The first exhibition to benefit from this gift was Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs (October 11, 2017–January 2, 2018), followed by Phenomenal Nature: Mrinalini Mukherjee (June 4–September 29, 2019), which marked the first comprehensive display of Mukherjee’s work in the United States. Other exhibitions that will benefit from this sponsorship include the upcoming Tree and Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India, 200 B.C.–A.D. 400, opening November 10, 2020, at The Met Fifth Avenue, along with exhibitions that will cover such topics as 17th-century Mughal art and contemporary Indian sculpture.

In 2017, the Museum honored Mrs. Ambani at The Met Winter Party, an event celebrating the achievements of those who foster greater diversity and inclusion in the world of art. Generous with her time and expertise, Mrs. Ambani is also a member of The Met's International Council.

Mrs. Ambani is especially committed to preserving and promoting India’s art, culture, and heritage. Reliance Foundation has sponsored key cultural events such as The Elephanta Festival, and Abbaji, the annual concert of master musician Ustad Zakir Hussain, among the many efforts to recognize the cultural legends of India and ensure their relevance to a younger generation. In its initiatives to advance knowledge of Indian arts internationally, the Foundation has supported not only the series of exhibitions at The Met but also presentations such as Gates of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In her role as Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, Mrs. Ambani has impacted the lives of more than 34 million people across India through the organization’s initiatives in rural transformation; health; education; sports for development; disaster response; arts, culture and heritage; and urban renewal. The Foundation’s education program pays special attention to gender equity to increase much-needed opportunities for girls and young women. The Foundation’s Dhirubhai Ambani Scholarship has so far provided financial support to 12,000 students to pursue graduation in any institution of their choice—nearly half of these scholarships are given to girls.

In 2017, Mrs. Ambani received the prestigious Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award from the President of India for the work of Reliance Foundation in the area of sports for development. In 2016, Forbes listed Mrs. Ambani as one of the 50 most powerful businesswomen in Asia. She is a member of the International Olympic Committee and is the first Indian woman to serve in that role.

Reliance Foundation hosts 4000 underprivileged children at a special preview of JioWonderland™ - Mumbai’s new festive extravaganza

  • 25 December, 2019

  • 5 min read

Smt. Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, helped spread the cheer of festive season amongst 4000 underprivileged children on December 25 by giving them a special preview of the magical world of JioWonderland™. An annual mega- extravaganza, JioWonderland™ is set to become a calendar event in the city of Mumbai.

At par with international carnivals, JioWonderland™ gave the children an exclusive preview of the exciting attractions such as drone shows, carousels, magic acts, Ferris wheel, trampoline parks, meet & greet with Santa Claus, photo booths and much more. A special character parade including the iconic Hamley and Hattie bear from Hamleys Family brought extra cheer to the day where the children saw their favourite characters in-person. The young ones carried back the memories of a mesmerising experience and special gifts handed over to them by Smt. Ambani and Santa.

Mrs Nita M Ambani, Founder and Chairperson, Reliance Foundation said: “It is the season of joy and giving and I strongly believe that the cheer should be shared with the children first and foremost. Children deserve a holistic life perspective and it comes from an understanding and experience of various aspects of life including the joy of the festive season! Every child should have the right to play and Reliance Foundation was delighted to provide the opportunity for 4000 underprivileged children to be the first to experience/enjoy the new JioWonderland™.”

Nita Ambani along with Isha Ambani Piramal, marked the opening of JioWonderland™ by switching on the lights of India’s tallest sustainable Christmas tree. The ‘Recycle4life Christmas tree’ is made of R|Elan™ GreenGold fabric and Relwood™. R|Elan™ GreenGold fabric is made from recycled post-consumer bottles; every year we recycle ~ 2 billion PET bottles by using renewable energy sources and ensuring zero waste concept at our manufacturing sites. RelWood™ which is 100% recyclable and enables us to achieve a wood like finish without containing any wood particles, ensures that not a single tree needs to get cut for the making of RelWood™. The tree is a representation of the plastic waste collected by Reliance employees as part of the Reliance Foundation’s Recycle4Life campaign, a ‘Swachhata hi Seva’ initiative. This record-setting collection drive, which resulted in collection of over 78 tons of plastic waste bottles, also contributed to making of the tree.

Reliance Foundation, under Smt. Nita Ambani’s leadership, has been organising Christmas celebrations for underprivileged children since 2012. Reliance Foundation also supports Hamleys’ toy donation drive which this year has distributed over 5000 toys to underprivileged children across India.
