Empowering rural communities with sustainable solutions

Reliance Foundation aims to improve rural livelihoods, foster sustainable agriculture, raise farm productivity and empower women in rural communities. It works towards these goals by engaging with communities through peer or partner organisations and with the government to leverage synergies.

Broadly, the Rural Transformation programme works towards its vision by:

  • Collaborating with rural communities to develop action plans at the household, village or, district level
  • Promoting sustainable natural resource management
  • Empowering communities with information to strengthen and safeguard livelihoods
  • Enabling pathways to collectivisation, access to finance, markets and social safety nets.

Key Initiatives

Under the Rural Transformation initiatives, Reliance Foundation has two core programmes, Reliance Foundation Bharat India Jodo (RF BIJ) and Rural Transformation Information Services (RTIS). These programmes complement and strengthen each other. RF BIJ, initiated in 2010 adopts an approach of empowering communities to take collective action towards sustainable livelihoods through multiple pillars. By leveraging digital platforms, RTIS reaches partners across the length and breadth of the country, connecting rural communities to advisories, information, and support on weather, fishing, farming, livestock rearing, and management.

The Rural Transformation programme covers women empowerment, nutrition security, climate resilience, water and ecological security, rural livelihood security and strengthening community institutions. With this approach, positive social change has been fostered in rural communities, with strengthened community structures, providing water, nutrition and livelihood security.
