Under the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, a new partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Reliance Foundation will bridge the gender digital divide in India. The partnership was announced at a W-GDP event yesterday, hosted by Deputy Secretary of State of the United States Stephen Biegun and with special guest, Ivanka Trump, Advisor to the President of the United States, and Deputy USAID Administrator Bonnie Glick. The event was live streamed at www.state.gov.

Ivanka Trump, Advisor to the President, said: “The W-GDP Fund was created to source and scale the most innovative programs to advance women’s economic empowerment. We are leveraging the resources and expertise of the U.S. government and the private sector so that activities have enduring, deep effects on the communities they reach.”

John Barsa, Acting Administrator, USAID, said: "Global prosperity will remain out of reach if we exclude half the population. At the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), we believe investment in women is key to unlocking human potential on a transformational scale. The W-GDP Fund at USAID is financing innovative solutions to close the economic gap between women and men and help our partners advance on their Journeys to SelfReliance."

At the event, through a virtual video message, Smt Nita. M Ambani, Founder and Chairperson, Reliance Foundation, said: “I am delighted and proud to announce that Reliance Foundation is joining forces with W-GDP, through our partnership with USAID. Together, we shall launch the W-GDP WomenConnect Challenge across India, in the fall of 2020. At the heart of this partnership, is our shared goal to help bridge both the gender divide and the digital divide in India.”

The W-GDP Women’s Connect Challenge (WCC) supports private sector-led approaches that close the gender digital divide, expands business opportunities, and empowers women. As part of programme, W-GDP will partner with the Reliance Foundation to create an India-specific expression of the WCC and incorporate the lessons of previous W-GDP WCC Rounds.

In 2016 Reliance launched Jio – a tech ecosystem that has ushered in digital life for 1.3 billion Indians and delivered first-hand a pan-India digital revolution that has transformed lives in ways unimaginable before. Today, Jio is the largest digital services company in India, and the second largest in the world. As many as 120 million Jio users are women, and the number is growing rapidly. This year Reliance Foundation is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, and over the last decade has impacted the lives of 36 million Indians. Together, Jio and Reliance Foundation will make a tremendous contribution to the W-GDP Initiative in India to help bridge the gender digital divide.

About The W-GDP Initiative

In February 2019, the White House established the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, the first whole-of-government approach to women’s economic empowerment. W-GDP seeks to reach 50 million women in the developing world by 2025 by focusing on three pillars – Women Prospering in the Workforce, Women Succeeding as Entrepreneurs and Women Enabled in the Economy. W-GDP leverages a new innovative fund, scaling private-public partnerships which address the three pillars. In its first year alone, W-GDP programs reached 12 million women across the globe.

Reliance Foundation Odisha High Performance Center Athletes to Build on Federation Cup Gains

  • 30 March, 2021
  • Mumbai
  • 7 min read

The 24th National Federation Cup in Patiala earlier this month has provided the coaching staff at the Reliance Foundation Odisha Athletics High Performance Center (HPC) in Bhubaneswar further confidence that the meticulously crafted programme for athletes under their wing is on the right track. Two athletes from the HPC – Amlan Borgohain in the 100m and Dilip Naik in the 800m and 1500m – participated at the competition, and both returned with Personal Best (PB) timings.

22-year old Borgohain, one of the youngest participants in the competition, recorded two PBs – 10.59 seconds in the heats and then 10.44 seconds in the semifinal. These efforts topped his earlier PB of 10.68 seconds, achieved at the qualifying competition for the World University Games at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, in the week prior to the Federation Cup. Borgohain is currently ranked third in India and second among athletes eligible for the World University Games that are scheduled for August 2021, and Head Coach James Hillier is convinced he will be chosen for the 100m as well as the 4 x 100m relay when the national selectors name the squad in April.

“Our original race-plan for this season, based on the annual plan we made for Amlan at the start of the year, was to open his season in June,” explains Hillier. “However, we decided to expose Amlan to compete at the Federation Cup at the last-minute due to the fact that the data we were getting from training suggested that he was in better shape and in better physical condition than we thought he would be in when he started training for this season back in January. So, after just 10 weeks of preparation and no specific race preparation, Amlan competed and recording two personal bests was very pleasing for him and the whole performance team.”

Borgohain has been one of the standout successes of the HPC, established collaboratively by the Odisha Government and Reliance Foundation, with the aim to improve the standard of athletics across the state and the country and produce home grown athletes who can achieve national and international success. With proactive support from the state government since operations began in 2019, athletes from the HPC haven’t just won medals at various competitions, but taken rapid strides forward in their progression. Borgohain, for instance, has gone from a complete unknown to one of India’s best sprinters in the course of the last year, running an incredible five metres faster in the 100m in this period.

“We are indebted to the Odisha Government who have supported this project right from its inception and have helped us create one of the best training facilities in India here at our base here in Bhubaneswar. Amlan has truly benefited from the expert coaching, sports science and medical support that he has access to at the HPC,” says Hillier.

“Bhubaneswar is clearly emerging as the best place in the country to train for athletics and Amlan is able to flourish here,” he added. “In a race where small margins can win and lose medals, a 5% improvement in a year is almost unheard of. And what's exciting for us is that the 100m is very much his second event as he is a better 200m runner. So, we look forward to see what times he can run over 200m later in the year.”

Amlan Borgohain

“Before I came to the HPC, I had no clear idea of how to train properly,” admits Borgohain. “Now, every aspect from nutrition to strength training to technique is handled by domain experts and it is explained clearly to us athletes. I have learnt that when the mind accepts the training methods, the body follows. Earlier, I would feel a sense of fear before competitions but now I feel excited, especially as I know I am very well prepared because of the work we have done with the coaches and support staff before the competitions.”

Dilip Naik, participation in 800m race, Sr. Federation Cup

Local boy Dilip Naik, who hails from the Nayagarh district in Odisha, is another athlete whose journey is being planned with precision. Naik, who is still only 19, used the experience of running with older athletes at the Federation Cup to his advantage by running a personal best of 1:54.65 in the heat to finish sixth. In Hillier’s assessment, based on the training data he has received, Naik is capable of running significantly faster.

“It often takes time to be able to express this in races,” Hillier explains. “We just have to be patient and keep improving him physically, mentally and tactically. We are confident that a medal at the Junior Nationals in November is still a realistic target.”

Powered by the learnings from the Federation Cup as well as the Junior Nationals in Guwahati in February, where athletes from the HPC returned with three medals, Hillier and his team will now return to the training regimen ahead of the next competition, planned for June.

While not setting himself medal-specific targets, Borgohain is focused entirely on consistently improving his timings to be in contention for a place in the Indian team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With the HPC operating with the shared vision of the state government and the coaching staff to leave no stone unturned towards emerging as the country’s leading athletics training facility, talents such as Amlan Borgohain and Dilip Naik are in safe hands to achieve their full potential.

Reliance Industries rallies its resources on a war footing to become Indias largest producer of medical grade liquid oxygen from a single location

  • IN APRIL 2021, RELIANCE SUPPLIED OVER 15,000 MT OF MEDICAL GRADE LIQUID OXYGEN FREE OF COST – HELPING NEARLY 15 LAKH PATIENTS
  • RELIANCE AIRLIFTED 24 ISO CONTAINERS FOR TRANSPORTING OXYGEN – CREATING AN ADDITIONAL 500 MT OF TRANSPORTATION CAPACITY FOR INDIA. SINCERE THANKS TO ARAMCO, BP AND IAF FOR THEIR HELP IN SOURCING AND TRANSPORTATION. MORE ISO CONTAINERS BEING AIR FREIGHTED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS

As India grapples with an unprecedented new wave of the Covid Pandemic, Reliance Industries has risen to the occasion by making an all-out effort to save precious lives.

A critical need of the hour is assured availability of medical grade liquid oxygen for treatment of severely ill patients across the country. Traditionally, Reliance is not a manufacturer of medical grade liquid oxygen. Yet, starting from Nil before the pandemic, Reliance Industries has now become India’s largest producer of this life-saving resource from a single location. At its refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in Jamnagar and other facilities, RIL now produces over 1000 MT of medical grade liquid oxygen per day — or over 11% of India’s total production – meeting the needs of nearly every one in ten patients.

Under the personal supervision of Shri Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, at Jamnagar, Reliance has adopted a two-pronged approach to strengthen the availability of medical oxygen in India:

  1. Refocusing several industrial processes at Reliance’s Jamnagar and other facilities for rapid scale-up in production of medical grade liquid oxygen.
  2. Augmenting loading and transportation capacities to ensure its swift and safe supply to States and Union Territories across India.

Enhancing production of Medical Grade Oxygen at Reliance facilities

  • Prior to this pandemic, Reliance was not a manufacturer of medical grade liquid oxygen. However, RIL engineers quickly reconfigured and optimised current operations – designed for Refining and Petrochemicals grade oxygen – to produce high-purity medical grade oxygen.
  • Medical grade liquid oxygen has to be produced in liquid form at -183°C with almost 99.5% purity, which poses extraordinary challenges and risks in production and maximising tonnage.
  • Reliance engineers worked tirelessly and, through process optimisation and modifications of Cryogenic Air Separation Units, were able maximise production of medical grade liquid oxygen in a very short span of time.
  • Reliance has now been able to ramp up its production of medical grade oxygen from ZERO to 1000 MT per day, constituting more than 11% of the country’s total medical grade liquid oxygen production.
  • This oxygen is being provided free-of-cost to several State Governments across the country to bring immediate relief to over 1 lakh patients on a daily basis.
  • Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, Reliance has supplied over 55,000 MT of medical grade liquid oxygen across the country.

Ensuring swift supply of Oxygen across States and Union territories

  • In addition to the production of high-quality medical grade liquid oxygen, the other challenge has been to quickly overcome the transportation bottleneck in supply of liquid oxygen to various parts of the country. This necessitated increasing the loading capacity for its safe and quick transportation.
  • To achieve this, Reliance engineers made smart logistical modifications to rail and road transport, such as laying parallel lines, using hoses, and loading up liquid tankers through pressure differential, since liquid oxygen pumps cannot be installed at short notice.
  • In another innovation, Reliance converted nitrogen tankers into transport trucks for medical grade oxygen, through innovative and safe processes that were approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO), the relevant regulatory body of the Government of India.
  • Reliance organised the airlifting of 24 ISO containers into India from Saudi Arabia, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and Thailand adding 500 MT of new transportation capacity for liquid Oxygen. These ISO containers will help in removing the transport constraints for medical grade liquid Oxygen in the country. In addition, Reliance is airfreighting more ISO containers over the next few days.
  • We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Aramco, BP and IAF for their immense help in providing and transporting ISO containers to help the country in its battle against Covid.

Commenting on these initiatives, Shri. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited, said: “For me and for all of us at Reliance, nothing is more important than saving every life as India battles against a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an immediate need to maximise India’s production and transportation capacities for medical grade oxygen. I am proud of our engineers at Jamnagar who have worked tirelessly, with a great sense of patriotic urgency, to meet this new challenge. I am truly humbled by the determination and sense of purpose shown by the bright, young members of the Reliance family who have once again risen to the occasion and delivered when India needs it the most.”

Smt. Nita Ambani, Founder-Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, said: "Our country is going through an unprecedented crisis. We at Reliance Foundation will continue to do everything we can to help. Every life is precious. Our plants at our Jamnagar refinery have been repurposed overnight to produce medical grade liquid oxygen that is being distributed across India. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow countrymen and women. Together, we will overcome these difficult times.”
