Mumbai, January 29, 2026: At the 21st Century Skills Conclave this week, Reliance Foundation marked a major milestone of reaching over 12 lakh people, with 3 lakh+ youth skilled and 1.8 lakh+ youth finding employment. With industry leaders, skilling practitioners, and young leaders, the Conclave deliberated on India’s evolving skills landscape and the future of work while celebrating journeys of youth who have transitioned from learning to earning. With keynote addresses, panel discussions, fireside conversations, and first-hand accounts from youth navigating the world of jobs, it was an effort to accelerate skilling and employment in line with India’s Skill India mission.
The need for adaptable, future-focused skills has never been greater, with technology reshaping industries and job roles. Summing up this need for the importance of soft skills, Ms Madhavi Sardeshmukh, Director of Vocational Education and Training, Government of Maharashtra, noted, “Capabilities matter the most today. We are moving towards building capabilities rather than focusing only on degrees to create a strong and future-ready workforce. I congratulate Reliance Foundation for its impactful skilling initiatives and milestones achieved, and urge industry to collaborate through public–private partnerships such as PM-SETU to develop an upgraded, industry-ready workforce.”
Speaking at the Conclave, Ms Nupur Bahl, Head - Skilling and Employment programme, Reliance Foundation, said, “India’s demographic dividend can translate into sustained national growth only when young people are equipped with future-ready skills. For decades, Reliance has believed in the transformative power of India’s youth. Today, this legacy continues through technology-enabled skilling initiatives that go beyond training to enable meaningful employment and long-term career pathways, towards enhanced lives of young people.”

Highlighting the impact of collaborative partnerships, NSDC CEO Shri Arunkumar Pillai said, “The successful completion of the first phase of the Future Ready Skill Initiative, reaching thousands of candidates, is a strong testament to the impact that collaborative efforts can create at scale. Our partnership with Reliance Foundation has enabled learners to acquire industry-relevant skills and improve their employability. With a future-focused skilling ecosystem that bridges aspiration, employability, and industry demand, Reliance Foundation continues to address critical skills gaps with the use of technology, AI and personalisation, strengthening pathways to sustainable livelihoods.
As the nature of work evolves, Reliance Foundation’s skilling initiatives adopt three core approaches—strengthening human and workplace skills, enabling digital and technology fluency, and fostering lifelong learning—to prepare young Indians for a rapidly changing job market.
Reliance Foundation’s skilling programme across 28 states of India includes:

•Key recommendations synthesised to inform national and global conversations at the India AI Impact Summit 2026
•Insights shared from the LiftEd EdTech Accelerator, which has reached over 3 million children
•Leaders from philanthropy, EdTech, academia and the private sector examined how AI-enabled education can deliver equitable, measurable learning gains at scale and emphasised the need for cross-sector collaboration across the ecosystem to achieve this
Mumbai, January 13, 2026: As an official pre-summit event of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Reliance Foundation, in partnership with Central Square Foundation, convened a high-level roundtable on AI in Education at Jio Institute, Navi Mumbai. The half-day convening brought together over 50 leaders and experts from philanthropic organisations, EdTech, academia and the private sector to examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and EdTech can be harnessed to improve learning outcomes and rethink education in the age of AI.
The convening concluded with a synthesis of strategic insights to inform ongoing national and global conversations at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Participants reiterated the importance of sustained collaboration between governments, private sector, innovators, researchers, and funders to ensure that AI-enabled EdTech strengthens education systems at scale rather than creating standalone tools. At a moment when AI is reshaping education systems globally, the dialogue also focused not only on innovation, but on the harder question of impact: how promising AI-enabled solutions can move beyond pilots to deliver meaningful, inclusive, and scalable learning gains in low-resource, multilingual contexts.
Grounding the Global Conversation: Innovation with Purpose
The discussions echoed global priorities rooted in local realities: aligning AI with learning science, safeguarding equity and inclusion, and measuring scale through learning outcomes rather than reach alone. Participants noted that better technology does not automatically translate into better learning.
The keynote address by Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Chief Data Scientist, Jio and Dean, Jio Institute, reflected on global debates around Education 4.0 and the need to fundamentally reimagine education systems for a digital- and AI-first world.

Dr. Shailesh Kumar said: “It is time to re-imagine our Education System—what should it look like if it was born today, in the post-connectivity and AI era? It is time to bring personalised education to every child on the planet.” He emphasised moving away from one-size-fits-all, ‘just-in-case’ education models towards personalised and student-centric learning systems that focus on building mastery learning and thinking skills through contextualised pedagogy, enabled by AI at scale.
Experts discussed the innovation landscape for AI-enabled learning, highlighting emerging use cases across personalised instruction, teacher support, assessment, and home-based learning—especially for early childhood education and foundational literacy and numeracy. The discussions also explored what it takes to scale, including institutional adoption, cost structures, multilingual content, data infrastructure, and the realities of deploying AI within government systems and community-based learning ecosystems.
Philanthropy as a Catalyst for Systemic Change
A central theme across the convening was the critical role of philanthropy in shaping the next phase of AI and EdTech in India. Participants emphasised that philanthropy’s value lies not only in funding innovation, but also in de-risking early ideas, enabling long-term evidence generation, strengthening organisational capacity, and convening diverse actors around shared priorities.
“Building AI and EdTech for impact is not just about the technology itself – it is about understanding the ground realities of implementing it in classrooms, homes, and communities. Learnings from the LiftEd EdTech Accelerator show how contextualised design and evidence-led approaches can support quality learning at scale,” said Dr. Vanita Sharma, Advisor – Strategic Initiatives, Reliance Foundation.
From Innovation to System-Wide Scale
The discussion highlighted that scaling effective AI-enabled learning solutions is a systems challenge—requiring alignment across policy, pedagogy, delivery models, research, and ecosystem partnerships. Participants stressed the need to design for India’s diversity, including multilingual content, offline or low-bandwidth access, shared-device use, and alignment with state curricula.
“The next frontier for EdTech is not just innovation, but scaling proven, contextualised solutions through government systems and community adoption to drive learning outcomes at scale,” said Gouri Gupta, Senior Project Director, EdTech, Central Square Foundation (CSF), setting the stage for recommendations to be carried forward to the national summit.
From Dialogue to Action
The event reinforced a shared commitment that AI and EdTech must serve as a force multiplier for equity, not efficiency alone. Participants underscored that teachers and parents remain central to learning, with AI acting as a supportive enabler through personalisation, feedback, and data-driven insights.
As India positions itself as a global leader in AI for social impact, such cross-sector dialogues play a vital role in shaping pathways from innovation to evidence, and from evidence to system-wide adoption. The insights from this roundtable will contribute to shaping the education agenda at the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

Feb 13, New Delhi: Building on the Government of India's NIPUN Bharat Mission to achieve universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) for children across India, LiftEd - a unique $18mn outcomes-based initiative - has benefitted 3.3 million children in India across 15+ states.
As we mark four years of the NIPUN Bharat Mission, LiftEd is demonstrating how the private sector and civil society can come together through innovative financing structures to support and strengthen the government's intent to universalise FLN by 2026-27.
To showcase its progress and spark meaningful dialogue on FLN, LiftEd's partners hosted an Annual Convening 'LiftEd: Making India NIPUN' in New Delhi. The event was attended by 175 people and brought together leading voices and thought leaders from across the education ecosystem. It featured a fireside chat with economist, author, and professor Karthik Muralidharan, insightful panel discussions, and inspiring showcases of solutions to advance FLN in India.
LiftEd is anchored by a consortium of partners, including the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Bridges Outcomes Partnerships, the Maitri Trust, Reliance Foundation, Atlassian, Standard Chartered Bank, and UBS Optimus Foundation. The British Asian Trust is the programme leader and Central Square Foundation and Dalberg Advisors are design and technical partners.
Smt. Nita M. Ambani, Founder Chairperson, Reliance Foundation said, “Reliance Foundation is a proud founding member of LiftEd which aims to strengthen foundational learning for children in India. In two and a half years, LiftEd has reached 3.3 million children across the country. It is a first-of-its-kind initiative aligned with the Government's NIPUN Bharat Mission that aims to achieve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for all children in India's primary schools by 2026-27. Every child needs a strong learning journey and working together with the LiftEd consortium partners, it is our joint mission to make this dream a reality."
LiftEd's Innovative Approach
LiftEd stands out for its innovative finance model and systemic impact. Using principles of outcomes-based financing, funding is tied to measurable results, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency. Instead of creating a parallel system, LiftEd strengthens the existing education ecosystem though three key interventions:
Development Impact Bond (DIB):
Partners with state governments in five states (Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar).
Focuses on improving governance, transforming administrators into educators, and establishing effective classroom practices across public schools.
Measures progress using children's learning assessments as defined by NIPUN Bharat alongside 'Systemic Shift Indicators'. These indicators track outcomes such as effective teacher mentorship, the integration of FLN data into block review meetings, and so on.
The education partners leading the implementation of the DIB are Kaivalya Education Foundation, Language and Learning Foundation, Peepul, and Pratham Education Foundation.
EdTech Accelerator:
Develops high-quality, contextually relevant EdTech solutions to improve FLN for children from low-income families across 15+ states.
Shapes the future of tech-based home learning for FLN by scaling effective EdTech solutions and generating deeper evidence on what works.
Supports partners to solve specific anchor challenges to improve scale, engagement, and product contextualisation for low-income segments.
The EdTech partners are Chimple, Ei Mindspark, Pratham Education Foundation, Rocket Learning, Sesame Workshop India, ThinkZone, and Top Parent.
District Innovation Challenge:
A unique, state-level, innovation challenge in partnership with a large state in east India to incentivise districts to improve FLN outcomes.
The Larger Impact:
LiftEd's innovative approach ensures it benefits millions of children over time by strengthening the education system itself. For example, in the DIB's first year alone, the education partners have encouraged as many as 60% of government meetings at the block level to regularly review FLN data and plans, translating these into concrete actions that improve FLN.
Ultimately, LiftEd demonstrates the power of collaboration between civil society, government, and private sector (samaj-sarkar-bazar), unlocking the potential of young learners, and reshaping India's education landscape.
About LiftEd:
LiftEd aims to impact the lives of up to 4 million children over 5 years by strengthening Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) in India through collective action, innovation, and finance. The coalition driving LiftEd - 26 partners across the private sector and civil society - is working in alignment with the Government of India's NIPUN Bharat Mission which identifies FLN as an 'urgent and necessary prerequisite to learning'.
